‘The best bookshop in town’ is the claim they make on Twitter and it’s hard to argue. Since it’s part of a chain, most of the choices about stock are made by head office, but Nick Macey, the friendly and well-informed manager, does have some autonomy and has ensured that books by local authors and on West Dorset history, walks and so forth, are in good supply, and that Waterstones participates in events such as the literary festival. The sections on children’s books and cooking are particularly strong and the recent refurbishment of the interior now allows browsing without blocking other customers.
